Mario Draghi

Dear sir M.Draghi,

with great admiration I read about your governance of ECB. A highly responsible task in these turbulent times. One of your main tasks seems to me to fight the economic crisis in Europe. The wisdom of your policy is beyond doubt.

Nevertheless, I would like to point out that economics as a science originates from moral philosophy. Exactly morality or moral considerations, I miss within the approach that we apply in Europe. Our fight for more and more consumerism as basics for recovery has something desperate. Consumption itself cannot possibly be a basis for more consumption. Because of the lack of a basis of trust and faith the financial markets show, like many citizens, a frantic and erratic behavior. This behavior needs a more solid foundation.

Based on the Christian-humanistic tradition which we share as Europeans, I want a text from the Bible to present. It is a phrase of the apostle Paul. In his letter to the church in Philippi in chapter 4 verse 19 he writes: “My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

Do you see opportunities from the faith and confidence that is expressed herein, to work towards increasing confidence among the inhabitants of our continent? Would it not be beneficial for us Europeans when we would work on trust and faith?

As a pastor in Utrecht, one of the major cities in the Netherlands, I try to live with the trust and faith that are expressed in Paul’s text. It is a testimony of the economy of grace, and points to a future that doesn’t need te be fought for, but will be given.

With the greatest esteem,   Rev.Pieter van Winden
